On which finger do you wear the engagement ring?

Date: 2023/06/30

It's not always obvious where the ring should be worn. The rules vary not only between different parts of the world, but also between our closest neighboring countries. Below we'll find out how it works!

Engagement ring on ring finger

Something that almost all cultures agree on is that the engagement ring should be worn on the ring finger. Other rings are also usually worn on that finger, hence the name ring finger. Many people prefer to wear rings on other fingers as well, and of course that's fine if you feel more comfortable with that. However, the tradition is that the engagement ring and wedding ring should be worn on the ring finger.

Engagement ring on left hand

In Sweden, we wear our engagement ring on the left hand. Countries like Finland, the UK and the US follow the same rule. Where does this rule actually come from? It actually comes from ancient Egypt.

The ancient Egyptians believed that there was a vein that ran from the left ring finger to the heart. Therefore, the finger was considered closer to the heart than any other finger. As a result, important rings were worn on the left ring finger. Above all, these were rings that symbolized love, family, fidelity and promises. Since the engagement ring symbolizes a promise of love, it should be worn on the ring finger of the left hand.

The idea is also that the ring on the fourth finger should remind us of something. When we look at the engagement ring on our finger, it should remind us of the love for our partner and the promise we made to each other. The purpose is to inspire us to remember and respect that promise.

Engagement ring on right hand

In many other countries, the engagement ring is worn on the right ring finger. One such country is Norway. This is because the ring finger of the right hand symbolizes agreements. It is believed that it is with the right hand that we make agreements, which is why the ring finger on the right hand is a strong symbol of promises and commitments.
