How to find the right ring size?
Date: 2026/05/19A guide to engagement and wedding rings
Finding the right ring size is one of the practical steps on the way to the big day. Here we go through the most common methods – step by step.

Why does ring size matter?
A ring that fits correctly should slide easily over the knuckle but not slip off the finger. That sounds simple, but fingers change throughout the day and with the seasons. Taking the time to measure properly is one of the easiest ways to ensure the ring feels right from the start.
Method 1: Measure with Schalins Sizer
The safest way to find the right ring size is to use a sizer – a simple measuring tool that provides an exact measurement directly on your finger.
We offer a free sizer that you can order to your home.
Here's how:
- Step 1 – Order the sizer.

- Step 2 – Choose the right time
Measure your finger at different times during the day. Fingers are largest in the evening and when it's warm, and smallest in the morning or when it's cold. Measuring at several times provides a more reliable result.
- Step 3 – Measure the correct finger
Measure the finger on which you intend to wear the ring. As a rule of thumb, the right and left ring fingers often differ slightly in size.
- Step 4 – Check the fit at the knuckle
The sizer should fit snugly when you pull it over the knuckle. This is usually where the finger is largest, and the ring needs to be able to pass without getting stuck.
- Step 5 – Note the size
Read the size directly on the sizer. It is given in millimeters and corresponds to the inner diameter of the ring.
Tip: Are you planning on a wider ring, for example 6–7 mm? Then it might be wise to go up half a size. A wider ring covers a larger part of the finger and can feel tighter than a narrower ring of the same size.
Method 2: Measure with a ring that already fits
Don't have a sizing band at home? Then you can use an existing ring as a starting measurement.
Step 1 – Choose the right ring
Take a ring that you know fits the finger you want to measure. It is important that it is a ring you use on the correct finger, not a ring that is loose or too tight.
Step 2 – Measure the inner diameter
Place the ring flat on a table and measure the inner diameter – from inside edge to inside edge – with a ruler. Measure in millimeters.
Step 3 – Compare with the size chart - see here.
Tip: If you are between two sizes, it is often better to choose the larger one. It is easier to adjust a ring that is slightly large than one that is too tight.

Practical tips to keep in mind
- Measure at the right time. Fingers can vary in size depending on temperature, time of day, and even salt intake. It's a good idea to measure several times throughout the day to get an average.
- Consider the ring width. A narrow ring of 2–3 mm and a wider ring of 6–7 mm can feel different – even in the same size. Wider rings generally fit tighter and may require half a size larger.
- Planning a surprise? If you want to keep the ring a secret, there are a couple of ways to discreetly find out the size. Borrow a ring that your partner wears on the correct finger and measure it at home. You can also contact us – we'll help you navigate the options.
- Ring size can be adjusted. If you're unsure and the ring doesn't fit perfectly, it can often be adjusted afterwards. Contact us and we'll tell you what applies to your specific model.
